01. What Is The Edge Of The World?
One of the most well-liked locations near Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, is the breathtaking desert hike known as "The Edge of the World," which follows the Tuwaiq Escarpment. This well-known location provides the ideal day excursion with stunning landscapes and views. The 700 km-long Tuwaiq Escarpment is a picturesque plateau with many excellent viewing locations in central Saudi Arabia. The extended edges that protrude from the plateau distinguish the Edge of the World. From these vantage points, the view seems "endless," with just a flat plain visible in the distance, and makes for an exciting and unique experience as the scenery appears to go on forever.
02. Where Is The Edge Of The World Located?
The Edge of the World is situated approximately 90 kilometers away from Riyadh, Saudi Arabia’s capital city. The drive to the gate in Acacia Valley, which is the starting point, will take roughly 75 minutes.
The GPS coordinates for the Edge of the World are 24.95158, 45.98759
Edge Of The World Riyadh Visiting Times
The rangers close the gate at Acacia Valley by 6.00 pm. So, plan your trip, especially if you travel without booking through a tour operator. Approximate a minimum of 2 hours for driving to Acacia Valley, 2 hours at the site, and another 2 hours for the drive back. It is best to visit the place during daylight hours as it is easy to get lost on the desert route, and driving on it at night can be particularly challenging. If you cannot make it out of Acacia Valley before 6.00 pm, you will be stuck there for the night as the rangers will close the gates.
Driving To The Edge Of The World
- Start your journey from Riyadh, heading north on King Khaled Rd. (535) towards Salbouk.
- After traveling 30 kilometers, you will reach an intersection. Turn left to route 5766, which leads to Jubayla.
- From here, set your odometer to zero and drive through small towns. This road transitions to route 5762, which leads to Sadus.
- Approximately 30 kilometers later, make a left onto a desert track at coordinates N24 57 21.2 E46 13 41.6; there are no signposts, just a dirt track. It may go nowhere, but this is the starting point for the off-road drive. You will see a blue Arabic sign approximately 50 meters from the road.
- Follow the dirt path, passing a fence on your left side. The track bends slightly right, leading to a dam and a gate near a small building where the rangers are located.
- Turn right after passing the entrance into Acacia Valley.
- Drive along the wadi for approximately 20 km, where the terrain gradually becomes rockier, eventually reaching the Edge of the World location.
- Keep right on all the forks you come across and avoid entering into small valleys that are dead ends.
Best Time To Visit
The autumn and winter seasons are ideal for seeing the stunning scenery of the Edge of the World since they offer clear skies and comfortable temperatures. On the other hand, summers can be hot and lack shade, which makes it less inviting for visitors. Weekday visits are preferable for a more peaceful experience because the location has grown in popularity over the years, drawing in expats and sometimes small crowds on winter weekend afternoons. October brings cooler nights in the desert, making overnight camping more comfortable. Temperatures can drop to almost zero degrees Celsius throughout the winter, which lasts from late November to early January. Packing appropriate winter gear is necessary for people planning to stay the night.
03. Safety In The Edge Of The World
- Exercise caution near cliff ledges, as loose rocks might cause rockslides or falls. There are no warning signs or fences anywhere on the site.
- Falling off the cliff is a danger. Stay vigilant, especially if you bring children.
- Wear supportive sneakers or hiking shoes for increased protection and traction. Sandals and Crocs are not recommended because of the uneven ground.
- A 4x4 is the safest way to access the place. The final stretch is soft sand, loose gravel, and rocky terrain. It is risky to try to get there in a standard car.
- For extra protection, think about driving in a convoy of multiple vehicles. Ensure every car has spare tires and tire repair kits, a shovel, a tow strap, and a full gas tank.
- When visiting with children, be constantly alert. The site's natural state presents risks. Thus, parental supervision is essential.
- Learn emergency protocols and have necessary supplies, including a first aid kit, close at hand.
- Keep the surroundings in their unaltered state. Remember appropriate tourism practices, and don't leave any trash behind.
- Research the weather before going on a trip. Severe weather can have an impact on both your overall enjoyment and safety while visiting.
04. How To Get The Best Views?
Climbing up the cliff from the parking area gives a great view, but going to the end is even better. That's where you feel like you're on "The edge of the world." After reaching the cliff, walk to the right for a bit. Then, there's a steep way down and a narrow path leading to the last rock cliff with amazing views. The walk takes about 15 to 30 minutes one way, depending on how fast you can go.
05. What You Will See
- Rich Birdlife: Observe eagles and sparrows soar over the escarpment and other species build their nests inside the walls.
- Rich in Fossils: The escarpment is a fossil mine containing fossils from approximately 50 million years ago when it was the ocean floor.
- Geological Wonder: Gaze down the valley and see dried-up rivers twisting away. After heavy rains, these rivers turn into natural watercourses.
- Seasonal Greenery: Some plains turn a vivid green color in the spring, contrasting sharply with the dry surroundings.
- Cultural Encounters: Traveling through the Acacia Valley, you may come across camels, goat herders, and people pitching camps beneath acacia trees.
06. What To Wear To Edge Of The World
Choose footwear appropriate for rocky environments; trainers offer the most excellent traction.
Women: For comfort during the walk, wear gym pants, tracksuit bottoms, or jeans. Although an abaya is traditional clothing in Saudi Arabia, wearing one on Edge of the World tours is optional, particularly when hiking.
Men: Stick to wearing sportswear or comfortable clothes made of cotton or linen.
Bring sweaters or jackets if you are traveling in the winter because the nights in the desert might be even cooler than in Riyadh. Expect some temperature changes while you are there.
Things To Pack For The Edge Of The World
